We had a wonderful family gathering.  For the first time in a few years the whole family was able to get together.  Good dinner and Cake , it was great.

3  CHICKS

PEEPERS AD MORTICIA

PEEPERS AnD MORTICIA

Another chick hatched last night another yellow one.  Un-named at this point.    Morticia spends lots of time teaching them things.  SHe showed them how to dust bathe themselves today.  ALl are eating and drinking.  I am enjoying them so much.

PLANTING SEEDS

I planted basil and Horehound and hope to get some Parsley and Cilantro done today.  My Grandmother used Horehound for coughs.  My Dad always bought Horehound drops at the start of winter.  You can use the leaves to make  a syrup, drops or just in tea.  I am growing it for the tea.

UPDATE ON MINNIE BISBEE

Minnie is doing well.  The fluids are helping her a lot.  SHe is eating better and feeling better.  She is helping me write the blog today.

Chris is here for the week and we are going to get some more of the barn done today and start on the porch.

Many thanks for reading my  blog today and I hope you have a wonderful day.  Carole and MInnie Read the rest of this entry »

TOMATOES-EGGS-FUNK SHUN

30 08 2013

Hello,

MAUDE

MAUDE

The night air last night was perfect, cool and so good for sleeping.  Fall is coming with some trees already changing colors.  Its my favorite time of year.  The smells and sights are a delight.  Wood fires, pumpkins, brightly colored leaves.  The sounds of rustling leaves under your feet.  I look forward to it.

Tomatoes

I got a call from The Farm Stand that my tomatoes were ready.  30 pounds of them.

I  started them right away in the crock pot.  Diced up onions, peppers and garlic, added some herbs and a fresh bay leaf and left them for the rest of the day.

By the time I got back to them and tried them I decided that I would label them as soup.  What a great hardy soup for winter just add some pasta and top with cheese.  Today I am going to make another batch.  I want to dry some too.

I dropped some items off at FUNK SHUN yesterday.  New things are added  to the shop every week.  It looks wonderful.  I love the Man Dolls which are great sellers, surely to please any guy or gal on your birthday or Christmas list.  Yes I did say Christmas, I have picked up a few things at FUNK SHUN already for Christmas presents.  Check it out and Christa is on facebook.

EGGS

Sometimes I take for granted just how wonderful chickens and the eggs they produce are.  They are a beautiful creation and such a good whole food.  My chickens delight me every day.  They are smart, sensitive and very much like people in their activities.  I am so glad that I have them.  Every two weeks two dozen eggs go to a friend at my old job

IDEAS

I have felt that the area in my brain that produces ideas has been dead in the water and somehow in the past 3 or so months its come alive again.   I am not busy making things for the shops.  Finishing up some very old projects and finding new ones that will work for all 3 places.

Many thanks for reading my blog and I hope you have a wonderful day.  Carole

CHICKEN CARAVAN-PLANTING PUMPKINS-THE SNAKE

21 05 2013

Hello

I have had a lot of interested in the Chicken Caravan so I though I would  share more pictures of it and some more information on it.  Mine is made of all things that were lying around except for the metal wagon which I purchased.  I purchased it at my local farm supply store.  The bottom is metal  lattice-work so poop and stuff falls through and the tires are good for carrying heavy things.

I made changes over the years to it.  With the nesting box inside of the original box there just  wasn’t  enough room for the 8 hens I have.  Last year I made a nest box and attached it to the outside.  I also put hinges on one of the screens so it would be easier to clean out.  This year I will do the other side.  I rarely move mine so each year the tires need some air in them.  If you have any questions please e-mail me and I will be happy to answer them.  I have had this  for 10 years, I did repaint it last year.  For an investment of less than $100 I think it was a good value.

Hen Moving Day

I spent  the whole morning getting things ready and moving the 8 hens.   They are happy to be out .  The first thing they did was take dirt baths.  Oh what fun.

THE SNAKE AND PLANTING PUMPKINS

Today I planted some pumpkins seeds.  All heirloom, sugar pumpkins, warty pumpkins, green ones and cinderella ones. I planted them on the embankment near my son’s house.  I still have room for more and will plant them another day.  I need to make a wattle fence so that these plants are protected from neighborhood dogs who use that area as a bathroom stop.  I have a few rogue garlic growing there and weeded lots of grass out of the area.  I brought the grass up to the  sheep and was walking down near the chicken area when I saw a huge snake (every snake to me is huge and dangerous this is from a very dangerous child-hood expierence.    Now I am terrified of snakes and  wish they would either hide when they see me or move on.  I called my son who heard a rattle sound.  Well anyway it turned out to be a milk snake.  I am hoping the event scared it as much as it did me and it has packed up its bags and moved on.

The FootStool

I worked on the footstool cover for an hour or so last night.   I like how its coming out.  I picked out a few colors and will use those colors throughout.

Today is hot and humid, rain was expected this afternoon but none came, the river is so low.

I will leave you tonight with this picture of Minne.

SHEEP-PLANTS-POTATOES

7 04 2013

Hello,

Sheepish the book

IMG_0102[1]

When I saw my sheep yesterday  I thought of all the talk in the book about how we should be more like sheep.  Taking the time to do the things that need to be done.  Napping in the sun is one I really like but rarely do.  This year I think I will do more of that.  Just closing ones eyes can refresh oneself.

Plants

My plants are doing well, the seeds I planted last week Roma Tomatoes and Basil are coming up nicely.

POTATOES

Today I am finishing up my order for organic potato seedlings  to send out tomorrow.  When the potato seedlings arrive I might be able to plant them right away.  I plant my potatoes in recycled plastic bins in which I have drilled holes.  During the winter or early spring I fill them with compost and soil.  I can move these anywhere there is space and good sun.  It’s a good way to recycle these bins and makes it much easier to grow lots of potatoes in small spaces.

IMG_0094[1]

They are easy to make, plastic bins don’t last forever they crack or break but are still useable for potatoes.  You need to drill 1 inch holes all around and in the bottom.    I drilled about 6 holes on the ends and 10  or so in the bottom and sides.  Good soil should be put in the bottom and layering it with compost  or in my case hen-house sweepings and soil up to about 6- 8 inches.  Plant your potatoes as usual and when the plant starts to grow you can add more compost up to the base of the leaves.  In the end the bin will probably be 3/4 full of soil and compost .  I have planted potatoes this way for several years getting a good crop.  This year I am hoping to get at least 50 pounds.    My goal within the next several years is to grow  at least 150 pounds.

Many thanks for reading my blog and I hope you have a wonderful day.                Carole

TOMATO SEEDS PLANTED-BACK HOME MAGAZINE-CATATTITUDE

25 03 2013

Hello,

The Moon last night was spectacular!!

TOMATO SEEDS PLANTED

P1020555

This morning I planted the four packages of tomato seeds.  Having some left over for next year.  I am sending my seed order soon.  I want to get one more package of tomato seeds which they don’t carry  at the feed store.  They are called Principe Borghese.  They are a traditional tomato for sun drying or oven roasting.  Very sweet and high yielding.  I am anxious to try them.  I have brought the small greenhouse down to start those seeds when they come.

BACK HOME MAGAZINE

I have been reading this magazine for quite some time.  The March/April issue is full of wonderful projects and many helpful hints.  I have found that this particular magazine saves me much more than the price of it .  I love the idea of making a stand up garden with pallets.  Especially since with each order of wood pellets a pallet comes with it.   Strawberries come to mind , vertical planting will make them much easier to pick.  I think I will plant herbs on the bottom two shelves.  What a great project.   Check out the magazine for more projects to help you become more self-sufficient.

There was much chattering in the hen house when this giant pumpkin was brought in.  Charlotte was more interested than anyone.

Shearing Day

I have to get busy cleaning out the barn door so it can be closed, and if my sheep are still damp tomorrow I will have to post-phone the shearing  I am thinking about getting covers for my sheep in the fall.  There fleeces really got messy this year,  the hay seemed dryer than usual.

Catattitude in the house

Willie was the last cat to come to the farm therefore it a was the duty of Angus to make sure that Willie got bossed around.  Angus would hide in back of doors in back of the pellet stove and pounce on poor unsuspecting Willie.  He suffered in silence for these past 3 and a half years until Millie arrived.

WILLLIE

WILLLIE

Now it seem the right of passage has fallen on  Willie.  He chases Millie.    Although he was quite surprised when Millie screamed and fought back.  The dynamics are changing.

Many thanks for reading my blog and I hope you have a wonderful day.    Carole

THE RUG IS FINISHED-GETTING READY TO PLANT THE SEEDS

24 03 2013

RUG

The rug is finished and on the wall.   I do like how it came out.    My hooking tends to be lumpy and bumpy. I  like it that way although when I look at other hooking with it all even there are times I wish I could do it like that.   My right hand has arthritis and I accept my limitations and go merrily onward.

P1020542

I will be glad to get a new camera!!!!!!

I am onto the Lighthouse Rug working on the rest of the lawn and house this week.  Next week I will start on the lighthouse itself and then the sky with a few puffins flying about.  I am hoping to have this finished before Camp Wool and will take the Blueberry Jar rug with me to work on there.  I also want to draw out the rug with my dad on his sled.

P1020544

The SEEDS

The kitchen counter is the best place for the seeds to be started.  I can have the light on all day and shut it off before I go to bed.  Upstairs in the south bedroom would have been perfect but there are mice about and they tend to dig up things and eat the seeds.  I can have a watchful eye in the kitchen, and Shorty patrols there frequently.

P1020545

My kitchen is not the normal large county kitchen of the mid 1800’s.  I don’t know why.  Its seems that it  was  enlarged  sometime, and  they used the wood shed .  That is the part that I had to have new sills, walls, insulation and flooring last summer.

Today I am setting it all up and washing the starter trays and tomorrow I will plant.  This gives the plants the right time to be ready to plant in the ground late May without getting too spindly.  At least I hope it happens that way.

Many thanks for reading my blog and I hope you have a wonderful day.                  Carole

THE COLD BEFORE THE STORM-THE BEE’S-MINNIE

19 03 2013

Hello,

WINTER MAKES A RETURN

The house has turned cold and damp this afternoon.  A storm is approaching, with 6 to 8 inches of snow to fall here.  I have noticed this year especially that when a storm is approaching the dry cold turns to a cold with humidity in it.   The kind of cold that goes through the bones.   Its suppose to start around 7 and go all night ending with sleet and rain tomorrow afternoon.  I just got the barn dried out.   Hope this is the last of it.

BEE’S

Recently the EU didn’t vote for banning pesticides containing Neonicotinoids despite evidence that this is the cause of Empty Hive syndrome.  All one has to do is look at the shelves of major store to see how many different kinds of pesticides are on the market.  The shelves are lined with them.  It sad to see when most times just a little work or an herbal solution will do the trick.

Minnie

P1020517

I took this picture today, the camera doesn’t even wake her up any more she has gotten used to things here.  Now I have to start removing the basket from the table.  She loves it up there.  That may be a harder task than I thought.

SEEDS

I never got the seeds started I will sometime this week.  The whole day revolved around paperwork for my Mothers house, delivering eggs and getting some groceries, next thing I knew the whole day was gone.  Hester won again!
