USING UP OLD YARN-ONE GOES OUT AND TWO COME IN-MORNING GLORIES

7 08 2015

GREETINGS

Another beautiful day today.  Lots to do and cooler weather to do it in.  Blanket weather at night.  Sometimes the hens have to lay eggs at the same time it does cause some space problems when they both want to do it in the same space.  Their are two more nest boxes!!

Matilda  is kind of upset with the situation!

USING UP OLD YARN

Years and Years ago I was given a trash bag full of very thick yarn.  It sat for years in the bag then I used some to weave a rug, then more to crochet a rug and now I am working on the last of it.

Made this cat bed while on the river.  One more to go and the yarn will finally be gone.  The cats will love them.

ONE GOES OUT AND TWO COME IN

Yesterday while letting the side chickens out I noticed that Hazel was holding his little leg up and hopping.  Immediately brought him in and soaked his leg,  I couldn’t see anything visible and it seems to be better today.  I also brought Mrs. Brown in as they can’t stand to be separated.

IMG_5571

I will keep them in for  a little while to watch him and bathe his foot daily.  When they go out they will go in the dog house as the new hen is working well with the others.  Now that this has all happened Eddie can finally go out with the girls that will happen this evening.  What a day for him.

I never get sick of seeing the beauty of morning glories.

FAMILY BLUEBERRY PICKING-ADDING THE NEW HEN TO THE FLOCK-HOPS AND MORNING GLORIES

2 08 2015

GREETINGS

The humidity has gone away .  It’s a beautiful summer day.

BLUEBERRY PICKING WITH FAMILY

IMG_5495

Friday was a delightful summer day with the humidity gone and bright blue skies we headed to Chesterfield to pick blueberries on my cousin’s farm.  Roberts Family Farm.  The berries are organic, sweet and plump.

IMG_5506

I picked over 7 pounds and Davids family picked over 11 pounds.  We rode down the back roads of Chesterfield and ended up at the Williamsburg General Store.

IMG_5497

A place where my Dad and Uncle took my children when they were small.  The penny candy and old-fashioned toys and home-made pastries were always their favorites.  And of course an ice cream cone to top off the day.  From the store back roads home where  a turkey vulture flew very close to the car and we saw a group of turkeys.

ADDING THE NEW HEN TO THE FLOCK

It’s always interesting to add a new hens to the flock.  I have done it many ways and you never can tell how its going to work out.

IMG_5512

Morticia has been sneaking in she is the bravest of the bantams and Kit is not happy with her and pecked her, it still did not stop Morticia but sent her daughter Violet, (who always hides behind her mothers apron strings) running back to safety.

IMG_5509

The only bird who did not come in was Hazel..   He was muttering to himself another big hen!  I  sat with them for a half hour and realized that there was only one bird in the flock who would peck her and it is Rosie (funny thing in the large group of hens in the front Rose was low man on the totem pole)  I think things will work out fine and there is plenty of time.  Every day I leave the gate open a little more.   I expect to see one of Samantha’s eggs in the dog house soon as she has been in and out of it.  She loved it there last year.

HOPS AND MORNING GLORIES

The hops have made an nice archway between the two chicken areas.

IMG_5511

The Morning Glories are so nice this year.  Each year I worry that they won’t come back but they do and with more brilliant colors.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this wonderful summer day.  Enjoy the day.  Carole

HELEN-THE VINTAGE SHETLAND PROJECT-MORNING GLORIES

31 07 2015

GREETINGS

It’s been hot and humid and today we had some showers.  The humidity is supposed to be much less tomorrow but tonight it’s just sticky.

HELEN

IMG_5480

Helen is done her antibiotics and seems to be so much better.  I hope Chris and I can get her outside area finished so she can spend the rest of the summer outside.  Although I think she loves being in the kitchen and getting all the attention.  SHe is so sweet.

A NEW KNITTING BOOK WITH HISTORY LESSONS AND PATTERNS -THE VINTAGE SHETLAND PROJECT

One of the patterns from the book is The Prisoner of War Jumper.   The jumper was knitted for Ralph Paterson by his wife. He was wearing it when he was taken prisoner of war in Hong Kong. He must have held it dear as he mended it with odds and ends of yarns.

This book is so important to the people of the Shetlands, shepherd’s, spinners, knitters and history buffs around the world.

The author Susan Crawford has written other vintage knitting books I am not sure when this book will be coming out but I will keep you posted or you can check out her website susancrawfordvintage.com

MORNING GLORIES

IMG_5482

The morning glories are out in force again this year.  I was worried that there would be none as the large tree fell on the bird house and their spot.  It was late spring when the mess was cleared away but they and the bird house escaped the worst of the tree damage.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this sultry evening.  I hope its cooler where you are.  Carole

GREETINGS

The day started off overcast with some rain but ended up sunny and slightly humid.

ANGUS

Angus is back on antibiotics as his UTI wasn’t gone.  He has now gotten use to going upstairs and now spends most of his day upstairs with Willy.   I think now since he has adjusted to his schedule he will gain back the pound he lost. Today he is very happy.

BREAKFAST FINALLY

BREAKFAST FINALLY

For a while I didn’t think he would get better.  With better liver tests and not quite half way through his liver medication I expect a good outcome.

FELTED CAT TOYS

I have been making felted cat toys for an order.  They are fun to make and cats enjoy them.  Shorty especially loves them and has many around the house, he carry’s them around in his mouth.

FAVORITE MOVIES

My Friend Deb reminded me about the movie The SHipping News.  SHe was watching again.  I have movies I like to watch again and again.  SOmetimes it the scenery sometimes its just the movie.  I watched The SHipping News again this past week.  The scenery of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia are breath-taking and I love the story and acting.  Another movie I just love is Dancing  At Lughnasa. It takes place in my favorite county in Ireland COunty Donegal. The story is beautiful with laughter and tears.  The scenery spectacular this is one you won’t want to miss its uplifting.   And lastly I love watching Under The Tuscan Sun. The scenery of the Amafi Coast is wonderful.  It’s an uplifting movie with wonderful characters in it.

SAMANTHA AND ROSIE

IMG_1554

Samantha and Rosie are doing well.  They are still on antibiotics and will be on them for a while.  Samantha has had a hard time leaving her Mother but now with her new friend, Rosie she is adapting.    The boys are really doing well and are going to be big roosters.  They don’t mind being handled and are friendly.

Everyday there are more and more morning glories opening and they are so beautiful.   I have decided to leave them be, they love it there so it must be the perfect spot for them and if they reseed themselves again that will become The Morning Glory bed and I will move the Herb Bed somewhere else.  The Tansy have set flowers and are getting ready to blossom which means I will have to start gathering them for fall arrangements soon in Charlemont.  When Chris comes back we will trim the willow, and crab-apple trees.  Many branches are rubbing against the house or the roof.  I still have wood to cut up but it seems every day it rains.  I hope we will have a sunny week and I will get that chore done.

Many thanks for reading my blog and I hope your day is wonderful.  Carole

Hooking, Canning and Morning Glories

30 07 2012

Hello

Every day there are more and more morning glories.   I think after 14 years of living here I have finally found the right spot for them.

The barn is going to be cleaned today and I am planning on working on the chicken caravan on the side yard.  I will take a photo of it when it is complete.   I just love it.  My friend Lynn her husband and I made it before I first got chickens.  She has a wonderful large house on wheel which she moves around and I wanted one that I could move around but I didn’t have the space to have one as large as she had.  I looked at Greenfield Farmers Co-op and they had this heavy-duty wagon with very sturdy wheels  and the metal is like mesh but stronger.  It worked perfectly for 5 or 6 hens but I have 7 hens that need to go into it so I am redoing it and adding a nest box on the outside back of it.  The wagon has a handle and can be moved.  I painted it bright yellow with a green tree on the door.  I hope to get the gals in the back of the barn in there soon.

The Girls from Canada
Louise and Marie Jose

HookingLouise and Marie Jose are sisters.  Louise is a wonderful hooker having just finished a portrait she found of a relative.  It looks exactly like the picture of him.  Her sister is an excellent knitter and is knitting from some very old patterns.  Look at the rabbit hat, I am encouraging her to sell the patterns.  I would love to make that hat.  We certainly don’t want to lose these wonderful old patterns.  I only see Louise at the summer event.  We have lunches and suppers together to catch up on each others lives and we do e-mail during the year. CanningToday I am going to start making Chopped Suey Pickles.   I have been making this recipe for over 35 years.  It’s a two-day process but it really doesn’t take a great deal of time.   Yesterday I picked about 12 cukes of assorted sizes and one purple pepper.  I will have to buy 5 more colored peppers today.  I will slice the cukes thin and peppers and onions and sprinkle them with salt and add enough cold water to cover them and let them sit overnight.  I will include the recipe tomorrow and also pictures.  These are delightful in the winter and have a tangy taste.

Wonderful Useful Wooden Box

These last few pictures are of the dyeing which was done at the hook-in.  The colors are wonderful.  I spotted this wonderful wooden box  and fell in love with it.  Great for hooking items, now I am looking for a couple and will stop at my favorite antique shop, STRAWBERRY FIELDS and see if she has any.

These last few pictures were taken at the hook-in.  The dyed wool is beautiful.  A lady at the hook-in had this wonderful wooden box.  I just love it, so suitable for project and very portable.  I will be on the look out for these at my local antique store, Strawberry Fields. Happy Day to You
