MORE SNOW – BAKING TODAY – MINNIE

7 03 2013

Hello

P1020468

The snow was supposed to start last night and go into Friday.  It snowed maybe and inch and blew away.  I was able to go out and get lime and oyster shells at the feed store and pick up some hay.  Its snowing now but very fine.  We could get between 2 and  8 inches no one seems to know.  Then from Sunday on it will be in the low 50’s.  When I get back from Florida it may be mud season here.  Well in my walk way it’s already mud season.  The wood stove is going and the smell of lemon grass oil is making its way through-out the house,

Baking

I have felt like baking and made brownies, date nut bread and some wonderful macaroni and cheese.  The macaroni and cheese has a dash of mustard and some finely chopped onions, that really does add to the flavor.

I have bought a few more seed packages.  2 watermelons and 2 pumpkins and 2 cucumbers.  I do have other pumpkin seeds from last year that I will grow too.

MINNIE

Minnie is settling in.  Today she wanted to be out with the other cats.  She likes drinking out of the large water dish and settled herself in a easy chair.  After 13 years of living on the streets, or in a shelter she finally has a home.  The stories she could tell.

I hope you have a wonderful day and many thanks for reading my blog.    Carole

FLOWERING MAPLE-OLD PITCHER-PUSSY WILLOWS

6 02 2013

Hello,

Today we are having snow showers but tomorrow night into Friday we are having another snow storm.

Flowering Maple

In the darkness of winter this plant brings me great joy.  Most of my plants are in the small south bedroom.  It sunny and warm there.  I will start my veggies in that room in March.  The Flowering Maple is by far my favorite winter plant.  It flowers most of the winter in bits and spurts.  I have found a seed company which carries the seeds in various colors.  I plan to  get a package and try growing them.

THE PITCHER

P1020285

I bought this pitcher many years ago at a tag sale for $.25.   It reminded me of the pitchers at the Ashfield Grange when we had Grange  Sunday dinners.  They would be brought to the table with either ice-cold milk or ice-cold water.   The Grange dinners would be full meals everything handmade by the grange ladies.  I went when I was a child through my children growing up.  I don’t think they have them anymore.  They were only held once a month and tickets had to be bought in advance and only May through November.  I use the pitcher  every day to fill the pot on the wood stove and to bring hot water for Sadie’s bucket.

PUSSY WILLOWS

These are from the branch I cut down a few days ago.  They are all starting to flower.  Some were already in flower from the warmer weather we had a few weeks ago.

Hope you have a wonderful day and thank you for reading my blog.

CRAFTS OF COLRAIN-SIGNS OF SPRING-SHORTY

30 01 2013

HELLO

Crafts of Colrain

The first meeting of the year was held  last night for the Crafts of Colrain.  There was a good crowd and work will begin on the tour.  New people were there and showed their wares and will be added to the tour.  Even though its 11 months till the tour things need to be done at this early date.  This year I hope to have some willow baskets from my own willow.

SHORTY

P1020213

After a restless night of not having the freedom of the house and food Shorty and I drove down to the Brookside Animal Hospital this morning.  The roads were well sanded  but there were icy spots.

Shorty had a few teeth removed and  tartar removed on the others and some blood work and a check for diabetes and he is happily at home.  Even though he was only gone for the day the other cats missed him and so did I.

SIGNS OF SPRING

Today there are glimpses  of spring everywhere.  From the birds at the feeders to the apple orchards and the warmer weather.  A sure sign is the man who comes to trim the apple trees each year at the local apple orchards.

P1020210

It’s a lone man who works about a month in the orchards trimming the branches to insure the best crop.  When he is gone my pussy willows are usually in bloom and spring is around the corner.

Their is a bluish tinge to the ice from the minerals within.

Hope you have a wonderful day and many thanks for reading my blog.    Carole
