DYE BOOKS

I have a large selection of dye books and want to share some of them with you.  Most are for natural dyeing which I did a lot of when I lived in Belchertown, Ma.  and its something I want to more of this year.

DYE PLANTS by John and Margaret Cannon

Published first in 1994 in association with The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.  It has wonderful illustrations by Gretel Dalby-Quemet.

It’s a detailed dye book with many plants such as White  Water Lily, Woad , Black Oak, Heather, Ivy and many more.  On the page across from the information there is a picture of the plant and the colors that you will get, just like on the front cover of the book. I found the book with a new cover on Amazon for $18.00 used and $24.95 new.

I would like to try Eucalyptus and White Water Lily and raspberries this summer.

The Weather

Its turned bitter again and temps will again be in the below zero numbers tonight.  I went to the grain store today to buy some more sheep grain and they had seed and supplies for growing your own out.  It’s hard to think of spring with this kind of weather.

UP HELLY AA

Europe’s largest fire festival was filmed today,  I had planned to watch it and totally forgot, I am hoping to stream it tomorrow.  For those of you who are interested in it go to uphellyaa.com.  This looks like a fun festival to be enjoyed even if your can’t attend.

Many thanks for reading my blog today and I hope you are warm tonight  Carole

THE SHETLANDS-PIECES OF WOOL FABRIC-JANE AND HARRY’S PARTY

6 10 2013

Hello

THE NORTH ATLANTIC NATIVE SHEEP AND WOOL CONFERENCE.

I finally was able to contact my spinning teacher Deb Robson on Facebook today.  She has arrived in The Shetlands and is getting ready to teach at the conference.  The conference seems to have a main theme with all its presenters.  Getting wool back to its rightful place in the world.  Since man-made products wool has lost some of its appeal. Now with more and more small farmers getting into raising sheep questions come up about what to do with it and how to make it into useful items.  These questions and more will be answered at the conference.  There will also be someone talking about Soay Sheep, a breed which I have been interested in for some time.  Soay Sheep are one of the oldest breeds of sheep and have not been crossed on the Island they live on, St. Kilda.  There have been recordings of them in the Bronze Age providing wool and food.  It sounds like a great conference and looking at the map where events are to be held there is a Morrison Pier, I wonder if a long-lost relative lived on that Island and that is why I am so drawn to it.  For more information on the conference go to http://www.shetlandwoolweek.com/conference

Bits and Pieces

I haven been packing up bits and pieces of wool fabric.  A bag full of different colors and kinds of wool fabric.

Ready for penny rugs or rug hooking.  If I lived another lifetime I would still have left over wool.  Its time to spread these around.

Jane and Harry’s Party

Today is my friend Jane and her Husband’s Anniversary/Harry’s birthday party.  Harry And I share the same birthday.  Even though it was misting it wasn’t too bad.  There was a large tent and plenty of room for everyone under it.  I visited with Ula and  DIck friends that I don’t see often .

Hello,

Today I want to share something special with you.  Visiting the Shetland  Isles is on my Bucket list.  And while I am there I would like to visit the premiere yarn company making Shetland Yarn, Jamieson and Smith.  I have used this yarn for years in various projects, not knowing that one day I would actually own Marley who is a Shetland sheep.  When this blog arrived in my in box this morning I knew that I wanted to share it with you.  I hope you enjoy the article and  the beauty of the shawl.

Sandras Royal Christening Robe.

Len’s Memorial.

My friend Lynn’s husband passed away recently.   He was 92 and lived an interesting life  He was a boiler designer by trade.  He and she both were great helps to me when I first arrived here.   The house was full of emergencies then, this and that breaking.  They always came when I called.  My sheep spent many a wonderful summers on their land.  We called it summer camp.  Len lived a wonderful life, with his beloved wife and this wonderful land.   I hope you enjoy the picture of this day.  The Memorial was planned with everyone in mind, family and friends gathered.  It was a great day to remember Len and visit with family and friends.  This picture is of some old and a new friend sitting on the studio porch.

SOMETHING TO DREAM  AND PLAN FOR

This week I got an e-mail from Deanne Fitzpatrick that she was holding a one day event in July of 2014 with Kaffe Fasset.  For those of you who don’t know of his works please visit http://www.kaffefasser.com .  I have been following him for years his colors in knitting and fabrics are astounding.  I thought about it overnight and decided why not.  I e-mailed and the 1 day hooking class was filled within a few hours.  Oh my could I get on a waiting list?  Yes I could and Deanne is trying to get him for another day.  I got an email late in the  day  Wednesday that I was in the second day, yesterday I called and gave them my information and they told me that this class was full with a waiting list too.  Its a year away but oh how exciting. I will be planning my trip to a place I love Nova Scotia throughout that time.  He and his assistant will help you draw a pattern and pick out your colors.  There is a book signing on Friday night and I think I will attend if there is room.

Chris Returns

Chris and Lilly Pad return today.  It will be good to have them back.

I hope you have a wonderful day and many thanks for reading my blog.  Carole
