GOODBYE MINNIE BISBEE

14 08 2014

HELLO

On a dreary Wednesday afternoon I said goodbye to my sweet Minnie Bisbee.  Its such a difficult thing to do but she had taken a turn for the worse and suffering was to follow. I knew it was coming but I was hoping that we would have a little more time.  Life will not be the same here on the farm.

Animals have come into my life for many reasons.  Some show up at my door and some are given to me and some rescued .  Minnie was a Joyous gift given to me by Cindy and her family.   She was quite unique having survived many hard times and scarey living in Puerto Rico.  it took quite some time for her to trust me but it happened.   She lived her life in absolute freedom here.  She didn’t want other cats around so she lived in 2 rooms upstairs.  She had comfy places to sleep the day away and windows to look out of.  She was content in her life.  SHe taught me that even though memories of hard times still linger good times are within our reach and love and trust can be found again.  She and I found each other in this world and we were meant to be together if only for a short time.  My fondest memory of her is when she slept above my head and put her little paw on me. From that time till now she has slept right beside me  every night.

I will see you over the Rainbow Bridge my sweet Minnie.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF CHICKENS-COLLECTING COMFREY-ANGUS

19 07 2014

GREETINGS

MORTICIA AND SAMANTHA

The have adjusted to the move and it didn’t take long for Mrs. Brown to come and visit,   She was very happy to see Morticia and found a place to slide herself under the fencing that divides the area.  A joyful reunion.  Mrs. Brown doesn’t like children and found Samantha annoying.  Samantha learned quickly to stick by her Mom.

For the past few days I have heard practicing, yesterday it was a terrible rooster sound today its much better,  Practice does make perfect.

ANGUS

Angus has lost some weight and just didn’t look right so off to the vets he went.

He has an infection and some signs of liver problems.  He is now on an antibiotic and some medications to help his liver.  Old age isn’t fun for any of us.

GATHERING COMFREY

Chris and I went up in the back of my son’s yard to gather comfrey.  It grows so well there.  I will dry some for winter use and make another batch of salve.

SHELBURNE FALLS FARMERS MARKET

It takes time for people to get to know your products and what you do.  Yesterday was a good day at the market for me.  Each week it gets better and better.  I will include a picture of the rug progress soon.  I have spun some of Elliotts wool and will be dyeing it purple this afternoon.  That will be the border color of the rug.  I am so enjoying this rug and the people at the market are enjoying the progress.

THE HEAT IS GONE-ANOTHER ATTIC FIND-MINNIE’S DOCTOR VISIT-A RARE SPOTTING

10 07 2014

GREETINGS

THE HEAT IS GONE

Violent thunderstorms and torrential rains were suppose to come last night as the humidity left and cooler air came in.  The clouds sure looked like that was going to happen.

IMG_3425  We did get some mild thunder and lightning and some rain but that was it.  We were spared for the second night in a row.  I am enjoying the cooler weather and will do so for another couple of days before the another bout of humidity comes.

OTHER ATTIC FINDS

Today I found a few things.  Some post cards of Holyoke from the 40’s.  These were sent from my Dad while he was in China to his bride to be.

IMG_3428

They described Holyoke which my Mother had never seen and where she would live a good part of her life.

The roasting pan  belonged to my Grandmother who passed away before my Mom and Dad were married.  As a child I remember the wonderful meals that were cooked in that pan.

MINNIE’S VISIT

She certainly doesn’t like going to the Vets.  It was a quick visit today just  having a blood draw and thats more than enough for little Minnie.  Her weight has dropped from 6.4 pounds to 6.2 pounds in spite of my efforts to get her to eat and drink.  She now drinks out of water glasses and is not interested in cat dishes at all.  Her test came out good so she does not need to go back for three months.  I hope I can increase her weight some before she goes back.  Coming home from the vet’s there was a lone baby Canadian Goose crossing the road.

A  RARE SPOTTING

Yesterday afternoon I went to pick up 5 bales of hay at Joe’s.  I was almost at his house when I passed a stone cellar hole where a house once stood and there was a coyote.  I thought it was a wolf  but came home and looked it up on the internet and it was a coyote.  It was a beautiful regal  creature one that I wouldn’t like to see near my house although I know there are some on the range across from me.  No pictures by the time I turned my camera on it was gone.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this delightful day.   Carole

DICKENS FELLOWSHIP VICTORIAN TEA-SAMANTHA-ELDERERRIES AND WINTERBERRIES

20 06 2014

GREETING

DICKENS FELLOWSHIP TEA

IMG_3273

My friend Louise sent me some wonderful pictures of the DICKENS FELLOWSHIP VICTORIAN TEA  that was held in the Westmont Library  Grounds in Montreal a few weeks ago.  Louise is a very talented lady and made  thecostumes and hats. The proceeds of this event and all others held by the Fellowship go to THE TINY TIM FUND of the Montreal Children’s Hospital.  A good time was held by all and wouldn’t Dickens  have been pleased by the event.  I wish there were a fellowship nearby.

SAMANTHIA

IMG_3272

I think that I can safely call her Samanthia now she sure looks like a hen.  She is so attached to Morticia, that poor Morticia can’t even lay an egg without her.  Her mournful cries when Mama is out of sight are heart wrenching.

ELDERBERRIES

IMG_3277

The elderberries I bought last year are really coming along nicely.  I even have a few blossoms on them this year.

IMG_3278

WINTERBERRIES

IMG_3274

I planted this Winterberry Bush around 5 years ago.  Its taken all this time to adjust to this place and this year for the first time I think there will be berries.

IMG_3276

I am so please to be able to go out in my own yard and be able to have these beautiful decorations.

MINNIE

Minnie is doing better now.  The reduction in the pill seems to have helped.    She is more active now and eating much better.

It’s a beautiful day here in Colrain and the clothes are out on the line with gentle breezes.  I hope that you have a wonderful day and many thanks for reading my blog.   Carole

MINNIE-NEW WINDOWS IN-BLUEBERRY BUSHES AND PINE NEEDLES

18 06 2014

GREETINGS

Colrain views

MINNIE

Minnie went to the vets this yesterday morning and was not happy about it at all.  More needles and fluids, by the time she was getting her fluids she was really angry.  Growling and hissing.  SHe is back to her old self now.

IMG_3266

Her tests came back low so her thyroid medication is to be reduced by half and another test may be administered to see if it is actually her thyroid or just part of the Kidney disease process.  I learned that crushing the pills as I had been doing was really not good as they give the food a pill taste and then cats stop eating.  I have got pill pockets and a pill pusher.  WIll try the pill pockets tonight..  She will need fluids occasionally so maybe twice a week I will administer them to her.  She is happy she is at home.

NEW WINDOWS IN

The new windows are in and it only took Brian a day and a half to do it.  They fit perfectly and are letting refreshing air into the house.

BLUEBERRIES AND PINE NEEDLES

Tyler and I went to the state forest to gather pine needles.  I weeded the blueberries, transplanted the Sweet Annie

IMG_3263

and packed the pine needles around the Blueberries.  I need another couple of bags to finish the job.  In a couple of weeks I will check the PH level to see if it has improved.

IMG_3264

Weather

Last night we had lots of thunderstorms, winds and downpours.  The storms ushered the humid air out and now we have cooling breezes and very little humidity.  It looks to be another perfect day her in the hills of Western Massachusetts.   Hope you day is wonderful and many thanks for reading my blog. Carole

GRASS FOR THE SHEEP-NEW WINDOWS-MINNIE

16 06 2014

GREETINGS

It’s a beautiful day here in Colrain.  A cooling breeze this morning and temps close to 80 this afternoon.

I spent a good part of yesterday planting seeds and some of the flowers from Susan.

GRASS FOR THE SHEEP

When the boys come we will be adding some fencing to the sheep’s entrance.  Lots of great grass has grown there and they can enjoy that as an addition to their daily hay.  It will be a slow process.  I will fence it in by 2 feet increments and only allow them to eat after breakfast and only for an hour.   Sheep are susceptible to over eating disease and I certainly don’t want that to happen.  It will be a nice treat from the hay.

FINALLY NEW WINDOWS

IMG_3260

This old house had been neglected for so many years that when I bought it and through the last 15 years that I have lived here I have had to do tons of repair.  The cement work was done and a new chimney was put up this spring and  windows that have needed replacing since I moved in are being replaced today.  My insurance company has made me replace them or they would cancel me.  I wasn’t going to do the windows because there are more pressing things that I would like to see done.  But I was assured that they would cancel me and I would not be able to get insurance elsewhere.  They also made me replace some boards on the porch which honestly didn’t need replacing.  They mentioned a cap on the chimney but never noticed that the whole chimney needed replacing.    I now equate insurance companies with cock roaches.  Invading your privacy and eating up all your money.  Oh well I will enjoy all the lovely breezes that come through these windows and enjoy more warmth in the winter from energy-efficient windows.  Sounds of Mama and the babies will fill the dining room too.

MINNIE

Minnie has an appointment with the Vet tomorrow.  She is not herself.  She is due for blood work to see if there is enough medication in her system.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this beautiful day. Carole

SPINNING CLASS-MINNIE-DYEING FLEECE-OATMEAL SOAP

4 05 2014

HELLO

SPINNING CLASS

Yesterday I had three wonderful ladies at the class.   Each one made a skein of plyed yarn at the end of class.  They each had a little knowledge of spinning and took home part of a white and dark fleece to wash

IMG_2941

IMG_2940

.  There were loads of interesting questions and the time just flew by.

Minnie

She continues to improve, her coat is so much better she is happier and eating without coaxing.  She is perky and talkative its a delight  to have her doing so well

.DYEING FLEECE

IMG_2947

Today I spent some time dyeing fleece.  SHeep and SHawl SHop have sold all my dyed fleece..  It was dyed with red and yellow and a few pinches of blue.  I love how it came out.

OATMEAL SOAP

I packaged up some of the Oatmeal Soap today.  I will have to make another 2 batches of it, sometime this week.

IMG_2952

I worked outside today for the first time this spring.  I removed the three hay bales that was against the kitchen wall.  I won’t do that next year as it encourages rodents.   I spread out the hay on pathways.  The tulips are up and some are ready to bloom.  Its windy and will be cool tonight.  Rain showers on an off all day so laundry was not hung out.  I have a clothesline full for tomorrow.

Many thanks for reading my blog and I hope that you had a delightful day.   Carole & Minnie
