GOODBYE MARLEY

27 10 2015

sheep 005It is with great sadness that I tell you that Marley crossed over the rainbow bridge tonight.  He was an imp and I will miss him terribly.

Only three days ago he was fine wanting me to  scratch him and running about.  I noticed something was not right  2 days ago so the Vet was called.  A wonderful new vet named Stephanie Vasser came and checked him out.  He had stopped eating by then she thought it was a urine blockage.  She gave him a pain meds shot and we hope it would correct itself.    He hadn’t eaten in well over 24 hours and was in pain so the decision was made.    There was no way for him to come back unless he had an operation which in the majority of cases doesn’t work.  I am sure he is running around with his friend Elliott on this starry  night.

Losses are to be expected on a farm, it doesn’t make it any easier.  The death of any member of my farm family is a loss  The barn seems bigger now with two loses within a 6 month period.

You will be missed Marley.  Till we meet again………………hurricane 009

AND THE RAINS CAME-BABY ROBINS-SHEEP WAITING

14 06 2015

GREETINGS

Warm days and cool nights, all the flowers are blooming, seedlings starting to emerge, chickens laying lots of eggs, sheep growing more wool, and cats watching chipmunks and birds by day and the antic’s of skunks at night.  We did have a terrible thunderstorm the night before last and the skunk must have been right near my bedroom window.  The sky filled up with light and with a crack of thunder the perfume de skunk came floating in my window.  The cats raced to the window and I smiled.  Even skunks get startled by the noise and light of the storm.

AND THE RAINS CAME

The rains came down in torrents the night before last. Mud and water flowed through the barn.

MUD

MUD

I will be digging trenches today as more heavy rains are expected tonight.  The downstairs back chicken coop got wet and I did clean that last night  Lauren , Tyler and Charlie came over and  it took them almost 4 hours to get it all cleaned.

What a huge help, it would have taken me alone a better part of a week.   My friend Danielle will be over sometime to load it all into her truck and  mulch her garden with it.  I have a never ending supply.

BABY ROBINS

From the hay door the Robins nest can be seen and Tyler took some great pictures.

THE BLIZZARD-ELLIOTT-MARLEY-THE BIRDS

27 01 2015

GREETINGS

THE BLIZZARD

All the preparation was for not.  We had around 6 inches of snow.  It was very windy and still is windy but we didn’t lose power and the snow was light and fluffy.    It was and is very cold.  Icicles now hang from the roofs.

IMG_4437

ELLIOTT

One of the preparations for the storm was separating Elliott from the sheep.  I had a gate which almost fits across the barn and he has been very comfortable there.  He will get up and move around but doesn’t have to worry about the sheep eating his food and tripping him.  I notice on warmer days he is much better much like me arthritis does that. It’s hard to watch such a vibrant and regal animal wind down.  He has protected the sheep day and night and now deserves some peace from them.

This is the year of separating Marly too.  At least in the winter.  He is so unruly and can be quite mean.  I can never turn my back on him or I will be flying in the air like a cartoon character.  He will be in the same area that the sheep are in but he will not be with them.

THE BIRDS

The birds have kept me hopping, eating food faster than I can fill the feeders.  Our neighborhood Ruby Woodpecker even came around trying to finish off the suet.

IMG_4432

Not the greatest picture taken through the kitchen window, he was pecking at the suet 100 miles an hour!

I have been spending this down time mending some things.  I have a whole basket full of things that need a little hand sewing here and there.  It’s a perfect thing to do on a cold, windy day.  I also managed to fix a problem on my computer although it took me a few timeS of playing around with it to get it done.

Many thanks for reading my blog today and i hope you have a wonderful day.  Carole

MINNIE-HESTER AND MARLEY-THE WARM UP-CELTIC BOOK OF DAYS

21 02 2014

HELLO,

While I was out in the back yesterday I spotted this on my neighbors chimney.  IMG_2417

UPDATE ON MINNIE

Minnie has her ups and downs she has put on a little weight but not much.  SHe is more trusting of me and often sleeps right next to me.  SHe is very afraid of a soda can opening.  Her past does creep in sometimes.  She seems happy and will be due soon for another check up.  I hope that we can do something about her kidney disease.

IMG_2411

Hester

She is doing well, eating well but not walking.  She is standing for a time each day.  I do think a vet visit is called for  I doubt if she will ever be able to be with the flock again and I really don’t think she cares.  She loves all the attention.

Marley

Marley managed to take off his mask, he has not changed.  We are working around him cleaning the barn and he still may be separated from the rest of the flock, time will tell.  His problems are not his fault they are the fault of people.

Chris and I spent some of yesterday digging trenches to divert water from coming into the barn

IMG_2416

.  There is quite a lot of snow on that mountain and it will be trickling down with the warmer weather that is now upon us

IMG_2415   I think we will see people making Maple Syrup this week.  I know if I was doing that this year I would be tapping the trees today.   Warm days and cold nights are expected through Sunday.  I am going to get my evaporator out of the garage this year and  make maple syrup next spring.

THE CELTIC BOOK OF DAYS

By Caitlin Matthews   A Guide to Celtic Spiritually & Wisdom

IMG_2421

I bought this book many years ago.  It is a wealth of information on Celtic customs and wonderful drawings.  You never know what each days reading will bring.  Yesterdays was birth customs in the west of Scotland.  Very interesting, today was an Irish riddle.  Each day holds new information about Celtic life.  I bet you can still find this book  on Amazon.

Oh Where Oh where is my dryer vent

IMG_2414It disappeared under tons of snow that fell from the barn roof yesterday, hitting the window with force.  The window is fine.

Many thanks for reading my blog and I hope you have a wonderful day.  Carole

MARLEY-NEW YORK SHEEP AND WOOL FESTIVAL-HAZEL

17 10 2013

GOOD MORNING

Marley and the Sheep

Yesterday was the  NO  bullying from Marley day.  No one got rammed in the gut or pushed out-of-the-way so Marley could have 3 feet  of room on the hay feeder.

IMG_1590

He did fine with the his headgear.  I was in an out of their area and gave them fresh water.  Not once did I get butted, he did come over for me to pet him, wagging his tail as I did so.  I did notice that he had a hard time with the carrots, he usually gets more than the rest but last night he had to search for them.  I do believe this is the best $20.00 I ever spent.

THIS YEARS POSTER AND T SHIRTS, I LOVE IT

THIS YEARS POSTER AND T SHIRTS, I LOVE IT

I have been so busy getting ready for this show and will be leaving early tomorrow afternoon.  It’s almost a 3 hour  beautiful ride to the show.  Sue Bates of SHeep Frills and I share 2 booth spaces.  Last year I barely filled mine but this year I have enough things to sell to fill mine up  We both compliment each other with our things to sell.  She has many yarn packages which people scoop up eagerly.  And many antique items and vintage clothing and her moth chaser is always a sell out.  I am bringing my triangle loom to sell this year and maybe a couple of spinning wheels, one very old compact one will come for sure.   The show is a  huge with so many things going on.  SO many sheep to see its wonderful.  We get very little chances to leave out booth, but I plan to visit briefly my friend Lisa Merian of SPinners Hill Farm.  She sells wonderful rovings and pottery which I was given many years ago and add a few pieces to it every year.  Its exciting  to be at the show  There are busses coming from everywhere, one from WEBS in Northampton, several of my friends will be on that bus. I will be getting things ready up till the moment I leave.

CRAFTS OF COLRAIN

It’s hard to believe that in less than a month The Crafts of Colrain will be here.  If  you are in the area its a wonderful tour of craft artisans.  You will have a chance to see wonderful products and beautiful Colrain.

Hazel

Hazel is a little better but not improving as quickly as I would have liked.  He is eating and that is a plus.

MARLEY-CAT PINCUSHIONS-SCENES FROM COLRAIN-HOPS DREAM PILLOWS

16 10 2013

HELLO,

MARLEY

Marley is wearing the latest head attire for the well dress Shetland Ram.

IMG_1587

It arrived yesterday and I decided to wait until breakfast today to put it on him.  It took a few minutes to get it on and adjusted and he was fidelity not from the head-gear but he wanted his breakfast.  I imagine he will have a melt down after he finishes eating.  It works real well.  I will keep it on him till I come back from the show.

CAT PINCUSHIONS

IMG_1579

I had fun making them, and only got 4 done.  t will be a test run at the show.  I want to make more primitive and folk items for my shop now.  I hope to promote the use of wool.  People have gotten away from wool using man-made products.    Wool is green, it can keep you warm and keep you dry.  Who can resist a wool blanket on a cool fall night.

SCENES FROM COLRAIN

IMG_1573

IMG_1578

The yellow leaves are now ending the beauty of fall.  Driving down county lanes your are bathed in the glow of them.  The picture of the Neon Flag is on the road to the center of Colrain.  It was done by a local artist as a remembrance of 9-11.  It is lite every night

MORE HOPS DREAM PILLOWS

IMG_1588

I have done a few more hops dream pillows and today I will get things put in boxes and I hope to start some heating pads.

Many thanks for reading my blog today and I hope you have a spectacular day.    Carole

COLRAIN AND THE CRAFTS OF COLRAIN-MARLEY-SWEET ANNIE=MINNIE BISBEE

4 10 2013

Hello

COLRAIN AND THE CRAFTS OF COLRAIN

This is the view coming into Colrain.  Its beautiful in any season but Fall is the best with all the wonderful colors.

IMG_1503

All the signs are up for the Crafts of Colrain, In another 6 weeks it will be here and people will delight in what we all have to offer.

IMG_1502

MARLEY

A couple of days ago I got the Primer Fence catalog.  I had bought the parts to build the feed bin from them.  People have been telling me about this face thing that you put over a rams face and they can’t see forward. therefore they cannot butt people or other sheep.  Where here it was in print.

IMG_1489

I am going to order one.  It will take time for him to get used to it and I will only use it when I will be away, in the spring and when I need to clean the barn.  No separate yard, no real changes for him except occasionally he will have to wear this mask.  I think some grain may entice him.

SWEET ANNIE

Yesterday I picked most of the Sweet Annie and some of the artemisia.  I wanted to get it picked before we had any rain.  I did leave some to reseed itself for next year.

IMG_1492

HESTER AND THE NORTH HENS

As you can see Hester has finally grown her feathers back only one stylishly purple one left

IMG_1494

The other hens are coming along well.  As soon as I finish the hen house they will move inside and will still have a small yard till the snow flys.

MINNIE BISBEE

Well I have spent a small fortune on dried food for Miss Bisbee, she didn’t like any of it.  So I have given up and bought a small bag of Fancy Feast of course she gobbled it down.  She just loves Fancy Feast and its not the best thing for her kidney disease but at least she is eating it.  Maybe now she will put on a little weight with the addition of dried food.

Many thanks for reading my blog today, I am sharing one more picture for my  you and my friends who are in Alabama and are missing the fall.  Its taken right near my house.
