SIDE YARD CLEAN UP-BEATRIX AND PRUDENCE-BLUEBERRY PICKING

25 07 2016

GREETINGS

Today is supposed to be the hottest day so far this summer and with humidity added to that I have gotten all my outdoor work done by 10 am.  All the animals have plenty of water and shade.

CHANGES IN THE SIDE YARDS

IMG_6934

There were two jungles of grapevines with jewel weed mixed in on both sides of the yard.  Both yards need lots of work.  I think all the hard work is done in each now its just the tidying in the driveway side .

The side yard near my Son’s house will require more work.  The people who have lived here before used the side yard as a dumping area.  I though I had cleaned it all up but found more roofing material , a saw and light bulbs . I will finish it up this week.

IMG_6935

I am going to put another raised bed there and hope to get some carrots in soon.  I want to put a window frame on it in the fall so I can have carrots most of the winter.  I did this before and it worked fine.

BEATRIX AND PRUDENCE

IMG_6938

Things have calmed down in the side yard chicken area.  I think Beatrix took over and Prudence  is in the mix.  Beatrix is now sleeping in the caravan with the rest of the chickens but Prudence is still in the dog house.  She will join them when she wants to.  Emma is being picked on by the jealous Mrs. Brown and Beatrix so there is something I can but to put on her that tastes awful  I may even have some of it and I am going to try that.  When I am there they will get a squirt.

ANNUAL BLUEBERRY PICKING

IMG_6927

For the past three years my Son and his family and myself have made a day of it at my Cousins Blueberry farm in Chesterfield.  Saturday was a hot day but there is almost always a breeze in Chesterfield.  The berries were huge and sweet  and easy picking.  Some people ate more than they picked!

The following pictures were taken on the way home.  Lots of interesting sites that day.

HAPPY FOURTH-FARMERS MARKET PROJECT-WEEKLY RIVER TIME=COSMO AND CATNIP

4 07 2016

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY

The humidity has left and we have warm days with coolish nights.  Ideal summer weather.  We had some much-needed rain but are still in a pre-drought condition

FARMERS MARKET PROJECT

I have two pieces that I need to finish this summer and the Farmers Market is a good place to work on them.

IMG_6886

This is such a fun piece I love working on it.

WEEKLY RIVER TIME

IMG_6871

I love the river, its peaceful and quiet so this summer I decided to take the boys to the river once a week.  I will bring a project they will do whatever they want.  Charlie loves to swim and Tyler like to check out animal habitats and construct boats out of things found on the riverbed.  His boat yesterday out of branches and leaves worked pretty well.  He has plans for a better model.  I brought my quilting pieces there.

COSMO AND CATNIP

IMG_6884

Catnip is sooooooo good!

I am so glad Cosmo came into my life.  He is a unique cat .   He has taught me lessons about only having one eye, and made me understand in the animal world they adapt so much more easily.   Little did I realize that one day there would be a one eyes sheep in my family.

I don’t know if he ever had real catnip but yesterday I introduced it to him.    He was over the moon about it.  The dried catnip is nice but the real stuff is so good.

IMG_6885

All he needs now is a bow tie!

A SUPER HERO NEXT DOOR.

IMG_6867

If I ever need a super hero there is one next door.  Her brothers helped her make the costume and Lil is a super hero these days.

I am still planting things in the garden, Brussel sprout plants went in yesterday and some flower seeds.  Slowly things are coming up.  Many thanks for reading my blog today.  Carole

THE ESCAPE ARTIST-A LITTLE SNOW-LIL

3 04 2016

IMG_6588

The faint mountain in the distance is Mount Tom which is located in my old home town Holyoke,  A wonderful place to grow up.  This is taken from Shelburne  more than 20 miles away.

GREETINGS

Winter weather has returned for a few days.  The winds are blowing off the mountain this morning making it feel even colder.  Wood smoke is in the air but alas it won’t last.  Spring birds are here huddling together to keep warm the bird feeders are full to keep them going through these few days.

THE ESCAPE ARTISTS

Mr. Peppers and Phoebe

Innocent looking for sure

A couple of days ago I was tidying up the back coop listening to Mr. Peepers and Phoebe chatting away  then I heard a strange sound.  I hurried out the back door and they were nowhere to be found.  These days I can’t run with these bad legs so it took me a few minutes to get around the side yard.  There they were as pleased as punch with themselves walking along and scratching up bugs as they went.  I tried to get them but they FLEW away!!!!!

By the time I got around to the other side of the house they were half way up the mountain having the time of their lives.  This time of year the creatures that live on the mountain are pretty hungry.  There would be no chance for the two of them unless they flew to the tree tops.  I ran to get Lauren and she came with Lil and chased them many times up and down the mountain and to neighbors houses.

Mr. Peppers found a wonderful spot on top of my neighbor Larry’s garage.  There he sat so proud of himself crowing.  With Larry in tow we continued the chase for about an hour.  We were all getting exhausted and so were the birds.  Just in the nick of time Tyler came home from school.  He loves birds and knows so much about all kinds of them, and within 15 minutes he had caught the two of them.  The two of them looked like they were going to pass out with all the fun and merriment.  They are safe now and when this bad weather is gone I will be out fixing up the covering that had blown off.  It will be much more secure from now on end.  And at some time I will need to trim their feathers.

A BIG DAY FOR LIL AT PRE-SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE

Lil has been waiting to go to school like her brothers.  Friday was an open house.  She was so happy.  So many new things to try, and in that one hour I think she tried them all.

BLUEBERRY PICKING-MAKING HERBAL VINEGAR-HELEN-A CAT STORY

17 07 2015

GREETINGS

The hot and hazy summer day are here but Wednesday night brought low temps and a cold breeze.  The days of summer are having me doing things that I love, making vinegar. drying herbs, putting up food and trying to stock  my shelves for the long winter ahead.  Oh how I wish for a couple of acres then I would hardly have to visit the grocery store.  But I will make do and be grateful for the land that I have.

BLUEBERRY PICKING

On Wednesday  Chris and I, Lauren, Charlie  Tyler and Lil went blueberry picking.  Li ate more than she picked.

IMG_5392 IMG_5393

The farm is along route 2 about 10 minutes from the house.  Its located on a hill top overlooking the valley below.

IMG_5388

The berries were huge and in no time we had 16 pounds and Lauren and family had a little less.

IMG_5400

I am hoping to get 50 pounds picked this summer.  I freeze them on cookie sheets and then bag them up.

MAKING HERBAL VINEGAR

I have been making Herbal Vinegar since I was in my twenties.  I use them and give them away as gifts.  Today I made a Dill/Garlic, a Rosemary/Garlic and a Oregano, Thyme and Garlic .

IMG_5411

HELEN

She has made a remarkable recover and will have her stitches out on MOnday.  SHe is eating me out of house and home, making up for lost time.

IMG_5408

We are working on her new home today.

A CAT STORY

I had a beautiful white cat named Ernest Dodge.  He was one of the many rescue cats that I had gotten.  He ran and played the days away.  One day I noticed this small black cat looking in the living room window watching Ernest only.  I am not taking any more cats I have way too many I said.

IMG_5415

She was at the window watching  Ernest  everyday with this loving look.  I started feeding her and in two weeks she was at the vets getting fixed.  SHe followed Ernest everywhere, cuddled with him it was pure love.  I found this old picture of Ethel Dodge (both  cats named for a  great Aunt and Uncle who meant so much to me) and all the wonderful memories came flooding back.  Animals come and go in my life, each one is special, each one I am grateful for no matter how they have come into my life, and yes more animals have knocked at my door and I have let them in.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this wonderful summer day.  I hope you are enjoying the day.  Carole

HELEN-SPINNING CLASS-NEW FRAME FOR EMBRODERY

12 07 2015

GREETINGS

Yesterday was a wonderful day, clothes dried well and there was a slight breeze.  Today there will be humidity in the air so outside chores will be done early.

Still working on the bathroom where the ceiling was pulled down.  Have the window area all cleaned up of debris. Bottles are being replenished with lavender/Cider vinegar for the Bath .  The old tin box holds all my shoe polishes and brushes.  With hardly a closet or storage area in this Old Farmhouse one must invent places to store things.

IMG_5358

HELEN

Helen has had a few glitches with a call to the Vet but now seems to be recovering .  SHe is eating well and talking like she use to. She likes being in the kitchen where there is much activity and loves being held.

She was caught eating the newspaper so now old sheets are her bedding.

Mmmmm Scrambled eggs with corn

SPINNING CLASS

Yesterday was the first of two sessions of Spinning Class  It went great with each girl making wonderful yarn.  Joan was a member of our Woolgathers Spinning Group and Deb is a new comer to spinning.  We had a lot of fun and they were given parts of 3 fleeces to wash during the week.  We will be working on carding and spinning those fleeces, talking about all sorts of dyeing and spinning mohair, linen and cotton next week.  Great fun.  Thanks Liz at SHeep and SHawl.

THE OLD FARM SCENE

It’s funny how you remember every detail of some things you did in your life and other things just slip your mind.  I remember being with my Aunt Milly in a tiny craft store in Longmeadow, Mass.  I saw this delightful embroidery pattern and wanted it, it reminded me of all my wonderful days spent at Old Sturbridge Village.  She bought it for me .  I spent hours and hours sitting in front of the fireplace in the Victorian house I lived in, working on this.  It needed cleaning and the frame that it was in wasn’t quite right.

IMG_5364

The old frame has been in my family for a while and with some adjustments it will accommodate the picture.  I love the attention to detail in this. Cat on the roof, the sledders looking like they were doing 100 miles an hour, chickens eating.

Many thanks for reading my blog today and I hope you have a lovely day.  Carole

Lil came over and wanted to play the piano.

We had another day of crazy weather yesterday.  Heavy rains, thunderstorms, Tornado warnings. Today is wonderful summer day.  This morning Lil found an egg.

IMG_5261

MYSTERY ILLNESS

The medication has not improved me at all so I will probably stop taking it soon. I think I have a form of Lymes disease which is often not diagnosed.  Further investigation is necessary.

GARY COMES

Gary came yesterday to spend some time here and may come back to help me out with the Crafts Of Colrain.

Today Gary turns 65 and we celebrated his birthday with a CHrista Snyder Cake .   Lil helped Gary blow out the candles and loves cake.

FOOTSTOOL-HOGWEED-CHINESE LANTERNS-GATHERING ROSE PETALS FOR CHICKENS

21 06 2015

GREETINGS

Lil checking for eggs this morning

Lil checking for eggs this morning

I can’t believe that I had to light a fire in the stove this morning.

IMG_5236

It was only in the 40’s here.  More rain coming in so trenches were dug this morning and will be checked tonight.  We have had curious weather this spring.  The one thing I can count on each year is the Jewelweed plant .  It really doesn’t care if its warm or cold it just grows and grows.  I have pulled about 1000 plants and have so many more to get out before seeds form.

FOOTSTOOL

It’s been years in the making and now it  will become a pillow.  It will not fit into the footstool frame.  I will cover the footstool with a paisley  material that I love.

IMG_5237HOGWEED

This is the first time I have ever heard of Hogweed.  A friend thought  she had it so I did some investigating online

Its listed as a Federal Noxious  plant.  It can grow up to 14 feet tall with leaves as large as 5 feet across.  DO NOT TOUCH THIS PLANT.  Touching the sap of this plant can cause sever burns, permanent scaring and even blindness.

CHINESE LANTERNS

They have come back this year and multiplied.  I am glad I do love them in fall decorations.

IMG_5239

ROSE PETALS

I am gathering and drying herbs for the chickens i the winter.  Today I picked the rose petals that fell on the ground.  I will dry them tomorrow.

IMG_5250

Many thanks for reading my blog today and I hope you have a wonderful Father’s Day tomorrow.   Carole
