BEACH TOWEL INTO A TABLE PAD-MAKING GINGERBREAD MEN AND STARS

3 12 2015

GREETINGS

It looks like its  a spring day instead of an almost winter day.  Mist is thick in the woods and the temps in the 40’s

IMG_6131.BEACH TOWEL INTO A TABLE PAD

My Mom had this wildly colored beach towel.   It was always taken to the beach in Florida. It was surprisingly unlike my Mom.  Inside her house was all painted white, she just didn’t like a lot of color, she was very conservative.  Of all the things I kept from her this one is precious.  But I had to do something with it so it could be used.  So its been sitting around for a few years.  Finally in the summer I cut it up.  It was a little fragile and there was little pieces of the towelling material all over.  I tried to crochet with it to make a bath mat but it raveled more.  Finally this week I decided to braid it.  Now its a table pad.  I do like it and it will go with my primitive red dining room.

IMG_6134

In one of the houses I lived in all the rooms were painted white too.  Now I have moved on from that and am making my house so colorful. The kitchen is coco brown and mustard, one of the bedrooms is a pumpkin color and the dining room is primitive red and mustard trim.   This weekend a few friends and I are going to  an open house in Leyden.  Kristen Nicholas, a famous knitter and crafter extraordinaire is holding it in her very colorful house.  We are all hoping to get some new ideas for our worlds.  An exciting thing to look forward to.  And she has lots of sheep.  A kindred spirit.

GINGERBREAD MEN

Today I have made these Gingerbread Men and stars.  I will be bringing them to the Pop Up Shop that is coming up in Turners Falls.  I have made then before and sold them they are not edible and will last a long time.

IMG_6132

Most of the stars will be used in swags which I make.  There will be bay leaves, cranberries and the stars.  The whole kitchen smells wonderful

It saddens me on this night to see more gun violence in California.  I hope and pray that we can stop all of this around the world.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this rainy day.  I hope that you enjoyed the day.  Carole\

A TOUCH OF SNOW-HOOKED MITTEN-OLD ORNAMENTS

23 12 2014

GREETINGS

We had a touch of snow this morning.  The hemlock tree outside the top of the barn window looked beautiful.

IMG_4253

Its raining now and its suppose to turn into sleet later on.  Then warm weather coming in.

HOOKED MITTEN.

IMG_4239

I saw these on the internet and thought it would be fun to make.  I thought I would put a pocket in the back to hold candy canes, it didn’t work out so I filled it with balsam and added a hanger.  I made another one which isn’t finished yet.  They were fun to make but ended up being more work than I thought they would be.

CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

I keep some of my oldest ornaments in a large glass jar and this year I saw people lighting up ornaments in jars so thought I would do it too.  I do love the effect .

IMG_4268

These ornaments are very old and many of them were on my Grandparents tree.  I love seeing them it brings back fond memories.

A WINTER REPRIEVE-DECEMBER 29TH-SKATING

19 12 2014

SEASONS GREETINGS

IMG_4223

My front door decoration.

I have had these wonderful old skates for many years.  I remember paying 25 cents for them at a flea market.  They have bought me a lot of joy.  Just looking at them I can see someone skating on a lake in the early part of the 20th century.  I used to take my children skating on Bray Lake at the Mount Tom Reservation.  I went there too as a child, skating.  There would be fires to warm you up.  What fun.  I don’t hear of skating much anymore, just indoor rinks.

WINTER REPRIEVE

Usually by this time the snow is up to the outside door of the chicken coop.  They were out yesterday and will be out today.  I still want to have a greenhouse set up for them and will try to plan it this winter.  I do have some windows and it could attach to their door area.

Is it Oatmeal time?

Is it Oatmeal time?

THE 29TH IS A GREAT DAY

Amtrak will be stopping in Greenfield for the first time in many years.  The tracks are fixed .  If the weather is good I plan to be there when the train pulls into the station. I would like to take the train to Springfield sometime this summer.   The scenery along the Connecticut River will be spectacular.  Sadly though they are not redoing the old Holyoke station and have put up a box type thing  for a station.  It was a beautiful station in its day.  It’s too bad that it couldn’t be fixed, the government spends it money on many other foolish things this would be much more inviting to tourists.

Another great event is that FINALLY happening The Vermont Yankee Nuclear power plant is closing.  A dangerous plant where its owners don’t even live around here.  I am still in the danger zone and will be till the plant is totally dismantled.  But its a step in the right direction.

Many  thanks for reading my blog today and I hope that you have a wonderful day.  Carole

CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS DAY-SAMMY-THE FRIENDLY BEASTS

25 12 2013

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

The weather is just right for Christmas Eve.  Now if there was just a little snow in the air, and that did happen.

Betty, Tea and Dylan came up this afternoon and we had a very nice visit.  Tea will be driving alone in a month.  Time goes by so quickly.  Dylan is so tall now.

My friend Francine reminded me today that tonight is the night the animals talk.    The Friendly Beast written by Robert Davis  in the 1920’s was  one the songs we used to sing as children. The music for this piece dates back to the 12th century.  I never hear it anymore and was glad that she reminded me of it.  It is a joyful song telling of all the gifts the animal brought to the Manager.  Here of course is my favorite part.

I, said the sheep with curly horn

I gave him my wool for his blanket warm

He wore my coat on Christmas morn

I said the sheep with curly horn

If you want to hear it done go online to The Friendly Beast

CHRISTMAS DAY

This is Sammy’s eighteenth Christmas with me.  Although he is on medications for different things , his hearing and walking have changed he still is the most lovable cat.  He is enjoying a pre-breakfast nap.

THE LIVING MANAGER

The service was really nice and there was lots of singing of Carol’s.  The sheep behaved themselves very well.

TIS THE SEASON-SAM-A GIFT FROM LOUISE

24 12 2012

HELLO

MURPHY AND MORTICIA

MURPHY AND MORTICIA

I love the Holidays but this year I didn’t get into the spirit of it until a few days ago.  Issues with my Mother and other things just got in the way.  I am finishing up gifts today.  Most gifts are home-made.

BROOKSIDE ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Sam has been having some respiratory issues for a few days.  He is  16 and his immune system is breaking down so he is on constant antibiotics and has done well for almost a year.  I decided to bring him into today and he was put on another antibiotic and may have to have some dental work done in the future.  Dr. Funk and his staff are so caring and kind to every animal that comes in there.  After a through exam Sammy had his nails done and was given a good combing and a couple of treats.

Willow is one of the resident cats there.  Her bed is by the window where there is a bird feeder.  Willow was brought in at 6 weeks unable to walk. Her every need is attended to every day.  She is able to see everyone who comes in, watch the birds and has a warm bed.  She is now 6 years old and is greeted by almost everyone who come in the door.

A SURPRISE FROM LOUISE

I met my friend Louise some years ago at a hooking event in Vermont.  We see each other about once a year and correspond by e-mail.  She is one of the best rug hookers I know.  She just completed a hooked portrait of a relative.  It is amazing.  She lives in Montreal and is very active in  rug hooking there.  A package arrived a few days ago and  I was rushing around that day and put it on the table.  Today I decided to open it.  Too my surprise was a  hooked sheep and she used Elliott’s roving in it.  It really is so beautiful and reminds me of Sadie.

Such a talented lady.    I am looking forward to seeing her this summer again.

I still havent gotten the picture of Tea I hope to have it up tomorrow.  Many thanks for reading my blog and I hope you have a Joyous Christmas.

BETTY AND TEA – LIL’S PICTURE WITH SANTA – OLD CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

23 12 2012

HELLO

Yesterday it  was windy and spitting snow all day long.  It didn’t amount too much though, but the wind spooked Elliott last night.  He did settle down though.

Yesterday I had a surprise visit from my youngest daughter Betty and her daughter Tea.  It was great to see them, Tea plays basketball for the high school team in Belchertown, Mass.   She is one of their best players.   We went over to visit Lil and her family and it was Tea’s first time holding her.  Hopefully I will have a picture tomorrow.

Lil did have a visit with Santa and here is the picture.

The Christmas decorations in this glass jar are from my childhood.  These were on many Christmas trees.  They are so delicate that I choose to keep them in this jar.  I have more in boxes in the attic which I will add to the jar.

Christmas Cards

I always make my own Christmas cards.  This year I haven’t finished them and they may go out as New Years Cards or not at all. No one wanted to wear the Santa’s hat, and tomorrow I will make one more try, I am hoping that Marley will be willing to do it.

Thank you for reading my blog and hope you have a wonderful day.     Carole

FINISHED QUILT – DRAFT DODGERS

16 12 2012

HELLO

THE QUILT

I finished the quilt today, I like the way it came out.  I think Oliver will probably use it.

DRAFT DODGERS

Some years ago I saw this draft dodger make out of a print of cats.  I looked and looked for that print and never found it.   The only thing I could find was individual cats that you would stuff.  I bought the fabric and cut it out and made an attempt to make the dodger and ended up putting it away.   I found it yesterday and the kitchen door really needs something  on the bottom to keep the cold air from coming in.  The door is the original door on the house so I really don’t want to replace it.

This is as far as I got today and hopefully tomorrow I can finish it.  I had saved a plastic bag which was long and thin to put the sand in.  You really need something heavy to keep it in place.  I got sandbox sand last summer.  I was able to sew one end of the bag and I fill it and will sew the other end when I have most of the sewing done.  The rest of the cats will be filled with wool.  It won’t be like the one I saw but it will do the job.   I have another one that is made with some fabric that I love.  That one was a lot easier to make and all I have to do is fill another bag of sand and stuff and sew the ends.

I am thinking of making some smaller ones maybe out of quilt squares for some of my windows (where the sash meets the sill)  The windows are original to the house.  I have combination storms and screens on almost all my windows and would love someday to have new windows.  The cost for each window installed is around $800.  That will have to wait.

THE CHRISTMAS TREE

David and the boys went out  to a tree farm and got a tree today.  I haven’t had a real tree in many years.  It’s a beautiful tree and quite local.  Tonight was decorating night and Lil stayed awake for it.

Bad weather is coming tomorrow, sleet, snow and maybe some rain.  The annual ATHA Rug Hooking Pot Luck was canceled.  Members live far and wide and when its raining in Amherst it probably would be snowing here.  It’s reschedled for January.

Hope you have a wonderful day and thank you for reading my blog.                           Carole
