Much cooler weather has been here for the past couple of days and it is welcomed.  Warm and humid is coming back and the pumpkins will continue to grow.

COSMO

Cosmo came through his operation with flying colors and looks the picture of health.  The news from the pathology report was not good.  The tumor was cancer and a very aggressive kind.  He will have his stitches out on Friday and the Vet and I will talk about how things will go for him.  He is active and happy and that is all that matters .  We are on this path together and we will  enjoy each other for as long as we can.  He is such a sweet and interesting man.

SHINGLES

This week I am supposed to be on Star Island off the coast of New Hampshire.  A place where I have gone many times and have enjoyed being 9 miles out to sea and the quietness of it.  Sadly I have the shingles and an acute respiratory infection.  In 2012 I had the Shingles shot.  At the time it was expensive and most insurances didn’t cover the cost.  One was lead to believe that it was a lifetime shot and would keep you from getting the shingles.  For those of you who believe that it is not true.  You have a 49 percent chance of getting them.  Now I still would get the shot but its sad that the medical community didn’t communicate this to everyone who got a shot.  I waited 2 weeks to go to the doctors.  I thought the rash was hives as I have been under some stress.  In these time we have to be pro active in everything we do.  Checking everything twice.  I am slowly getting better but it will take time.

PUMPKINS

I just can’t believe these pumpkins.  One is growing on the manure pile and I watch it increase in size everyday.  The large one near the backyard chickens must weight over 50 pounds, I will have to move it out of there with a sled.  These pumpkin seeds were from Baker Seeds.  Their seeds are great and all heirloom.  These seeds were a couple of years old.  The other seeds that I planted were a year or two old but not heirloom and none came up.  Even though they were organic seeds I think Baker Seed Company has a superior seed.

This pumpkin is very big, I have had to move it several times away from Mr. Peepers fence.

The manure pile is a great place for a pumpkkin to grow!

MORE INFO ON THE BRITISH SHIPPING NEWS-BAKER CREEK CATALOG ARRIVED

17 12 2013
  1. Hello,
  2. The cold has arrived and snow will be arriving this afternoon.  I have got the wood stove going so the house will be toasty.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE BRITISH SHIPPING NEWS

My friend Mary Jane who has lived in England for many years and is now back in the states e-mailed me yesterday about the Shipping News. You can listen to the music alone on you tube by  typing in Sailing By.  Mary Jane use to fall asleep by it too.

A friend from Ireland Anne e-mailed me to say that BBC is thinking of taking it off the air because most people can access weather via the internet.  I think that will cause quite a stir and hope it won’t happen.  Some traditions are better left as they are.

I found a little history about the SHipping News.  Its was started because of a terrible shipping accident  in 1859.  The sinking of The Royal Charter off the coast of Anglesey with the loss of 450 souls.  After this terrible accident England introduced a warning system, although things have changed since then, ships having onboard technology to provide the information, most still use The Shipping News .  And that is not counting all the people who just love to listen to it.

BAKER CREEK CATALOG

IMG_2058

My catalog arrived a few days ago and its full of information plus so many different kind of seeds.  There was an interesting article about GMO’s.  Baker Creek used to sell  around 24 types of corn seeds.  Once they began testing the seeds they are now down to half that for sale. A significant loss for all of us, the farmer and Baker Creek.  They won’t sell these seeds till  the seeds are free from GMO.  Even if you have planted non gmo seeds if the farmer next door plants them you are likely to have some in  your crop.  It’s a disaster for the farmer for Baker Creek and for all of us.

With many people  getting on the GMO band wagon you have to wonder if the corn you are buying is really non GMO.  I will only buy corn this coming summer from a stand that has its seed tested.

The snow arrived mid morning and at 6 pm its till snowing heavily.  The 3-5 inches has been long surpassed and I just wonder how much we will get.  I did get my roof shovel out and shoveled the porch roof this evening.  I hope you had a wonderful day and many thanks for reading my blog.   Carole

SAM-SANTA RUG- OLIVER – PERMACULTURE -BAKER CREEK HEIRLOOM SEEDS GMO’S

7 12 2012

HELLO

P1010730

It was a little chilly in the house last night,   I had started the pellet stove a little later than usual, I turned on the mattress pad heater on my bed and with the fresh sheets Sam found it a most agreeable place.

SANTA RUG

P1010734

Its finished and hanging.   I hung some fresh greens around it to give the hallway that wonderful holiday smell.

Which reminded me that I need to plant a few more evergreens.  I have been wanting to plant two tall Junipers near my front steps.  It would make another hiding place for the birds and give me some different greens during the holidays and also would be a great place for lights and that would lighten up the steps more.     I plan to get at least one cedar to plant near the sheep and barn area and at least two hemlock to plant near the woods.  These will add to my collection of greens for the holiday season and  give birds and animals  good nesting and hiding places.   More birds mean less damaging insects.

OLIVER

Well I gave him the relax and sleep half pill and  it made him a little more relaxed but not enough for me to catch him.  I will get more medication and we will try again on Monday.
