WINTER MIX-BOOKS I AM READING-MAMA AND THE KIDS

3 12 2014

GREETINGS

We had a winter mix overnight.  Ice was clinging to the trees earlier in the morning.  It’s all cleared out now but still foggy.

The temps have risen and all is well.  Willie has been under the weather and is going to the vets this afternoon.

BOOKS I AM READING-STILL LIFE WITH CHICKENS

I got this book on a trip to Florida at a Library book sale.   I read it then and am reading it again.  I like reading some books for a second or even a third time.  I seem to always get  more out of the book than when I read it the first time.  It’s about life changes and raising chickens.  I do love this book and highly recommend it.

MAMA AND THE CHICKS

It’s been hard to take pictures of them So now I let them out every day and its easier.  They are practicing their flying.

IMG_4125

They have grown so much but still want their Mama around.  I am surprised that she hasn’t gotten sick of them yet.  Peeps is a rooster , you can see by his bright red comb and Tweeter is a hen..

IMG_4131

IMG_4132

They talk talk talk all day.

Some days I think I live in a magical world of funny chickens, crazy cats and renegade sheep.  Today is one of them.    I forgot to put the chain back on the gate last night and Carol K, Maude and Marley decided to help themselves to breakfast early.  While I was taking pictures of the chickens Tweeter flew back to the top of the cage and jumped in only realizing that Mama and Peeps were still walking around outside, the crying was pitiful, and Sammy was full of vim and vigor racing upstairs and downstairs, into the sink, playing with kindling and egg shells.  What a morning.  Hope you have a wonderful day.  Carole

DANDELIONS-BABY CHICKS-MINNIE-SCENES FROM BACK ROADS

21 05 2014

HELLO

It’s a bright, beautiful day here at the farm, with rain coming in this afternoon.  The weekend of the 40th Massachusetts Sheep and Wool Fest is promised to be beautiful.

DANDELIONS

Yesterday was hay pick up day.  I made two trips to Joe’s  to get 5 bales at a time.  After I picked up the first load I decided to pick some dandelions.  There were many by the dirt roadside.  I picked about half a pot  full and plan to make dye today using my iron pot.  It should come out a moss-green.  I do love gathering dye stuffs in the wild.  It’s a quiet task and the sounds of the forests are delightful.

BABY CHICKS

They are doing well in their new surroundings. Only one chick had to be helped up to the nest box.

CHICKEN LITTLE

CHICKEN LITTLE

There was a stare down between Peppers (who is almost the same size as Mama) and Morticia.  It lasted almost a minute.  I heard a squawk and then saw the stare down,   I am sure she was saying,  even though you are as big as me I am still the Mother.

PLANTING FLOWERS

I bought some wild flower seeds to plant in Sadie’s Place.  I want something that will be beautiful this summer but also come back year after year.  Lil wanted to help and she had the shovel and a little rake.  It will be a great spot for us to pick some bouquets later in the summer.

MINNIE

I can no longer feel her backbone, what a remarkable recovery.  She is so much  happier now.IMG_3081

Many thanks for reading my blog today and I hope you have a wonderful day.  I am leaving you with views one from Colrain and the other from Shelburne.  The one from Colrain looks to the north and you can see Vermont and New Hampshire from here.  The other view is to the South where you can see Mount Tom which is in my hometown of Holyoke.    Carole

The yarns came out so different and all made quite nice designer yarns.

FRANCIS AND SWEET PEA

Both hens laid eggs this morning.  Francis is well over 10 years old which is getting up there in hen’s years.  Sweet Pea, I believe is the Mother of the two light-colored chicks.

Books I Am READING

The Field Guide TO Fleece

by Deb Robson and Carol Ekarius

This small field guide is a MUST for spinners and buyers of wool.  Everything you need to know to pick out a fleece for your project is on two pages.   A description of the sheep, use of dyes on the fleece and best uses for the fleece along with pictures of the sheep and fleece are listed.  This guide is small and will fit right into your purse.  Take it to the next sheep and wool event .

The days are going by fast at the farm, still many spring chores to get done.  Today the chicks will be moved, what a delight for them and for me.   They are not going outside just yet but into the back coop.  I need to tighten security in their yard.  I still have no idea if they are roosters or hen’s.  Here’s hoping they are hen’s.

It’s a cool morning but will warm up quickly.  Hope you have a wonderful day, thanks for reading my blog.     Carole

500 POSTS

It’s hard to believe that I have written 500 posts.  Writing my blog has been a wonderful experience for me.  I have met loads of wonderful people and kept in touch with wonderful friends.    I do try to post every day but sometimes things get in the way and a couple of days go by. Thanks for staying with me.  I appreciate each and every one of you.

MINNIE

Minnie is back at the doctors today.  SHe has an eye problem that she has had in the past.  Lots more tests were done including an x-ray.  He thinks that her eye and coughing may be from her hydration issues.  Tomorrow we will have results from the blood work which will show more.  SHe was quite upset about the whole things and is now happily in her basket.

THE CHICKS

It’s hard to believe that the chicks are 3 weeks old.  They are growing so fast.

SHELBURNE FALLS FARMERS MARKET-THE GRANGE FAIR-MORTICIA AND THE CHICKS

23 04 2014

Hello.

Shelburne Falls Farmers Market I will be at the farmers market this year starting on May 30th.  It’s a great farmers market with very interesting veggies, all sorts of local crafts.  I am looking forward to spending Friday afternoons there.

  THE GRANGE FAIR

I found this little gem on Amazon Prime one night when I couldn’t sleep . It’s about a Pennsylvania Grange Fair thats been in existence since the late 1800’s.  It is probably the only tent fair left in the world.  Some tent spots have been in families for 6 generations.  Families come with beds, refrigeraters, stoves and everything they need for the days of the fair. It’s a agricultural fair with everything from plants to cows.  There are prizes for the best canned veggies and fruits, the best pies and crafts and there is a coveted price for the best decorated tent.  There are many things to entertain everyone from young to old.  Carnaval rides and dances.  It sounds like a wonderful time.  Things like these are little gems and I am so glad that people are keeping it going.

A CUP OF TEA

Its turned damp this afternoon and I have settled myself down in front of the computer with a cuppa

MY FAVORITE CUP AND SAUCER. ROSE CHINTZ BY jOHNSON BROTHERS

MY FAVORITE CUP AND SAUCER. ROSE CHINTZ BY jOHNSON BROTHERS

. I remember my first cup of tea.  I was visiting my Aunt Eva , was about 8 or 9 and she asked me if I wanted a cup of tea.  SHe brought out a cup and saucer and poured some tea from a tea pot.   I added a little sugar and just loved it and have been a tea drinker since then.  Over twenty years ago I discovered Lyons brand and only drink that. I haven’t found another tea that can compare to its deep rich taste.

When I am visiting Ireland my suitcase is loaded with Lyons tea on my return.  It keeps well stored in tins.

Morticia and the Chicks

They are changing every day.  Peepers the first hatched has some little wing feathers.

They follow Mama around and watch as she teaches them lessons.    I could sit and watch them all day.

Many thanks for reading my blog today and I hope you have a lovely day.   Carole
