GREETINGS

Today start out very windy but then grew into a beautiful sunny fall day.

NEW BANTAM CHICKS

IMG_3872

A big surprise Yesterday when I found 2 sweet little bantam chicks under Morticia.   I added more hay and Mrs. Brown was standing guard so no other hens would come near the new babies.I left them in the Caravan for the night but took them out today and put them into a cat carrier in the house.  They will stay in there till the others come in which will be in a week or two.  They both seem to be doing well.  Mom is good and taking good care of the little ones.  Peeps and Tweets are their names.

SAM

Sam has another infection and is on antibiotics.  The vet also suggested Lysine for all the cats.  I have started giving them it.  It helps with stress.  The old cats have been under stress with the new cats coming and the new cats were on lot of stress being moved around.  He is acting much better today.

GOODBYE GARY

Gary left today by Amtrak..  He will be home sometime after 9 pm and may come back up for Christmas.   The Brattleboro station is always interesting.  They are very friendly there coming out and giving updates on the trains arrival and what is going on at the station.  In May they invite people to come and learn about train safety     There are many lives lost each year by people walking on the tracks.  It’s a very good program for children who often tend to play on the tracks or put pennies on the track.  If a train hits the pennies in the right way they will shoot faster than a bullet.  I hope that my Grand children can make one of these weekends.

5 hens were bought, 2 for Lynn and 3 for me.  I got a Welsummer, a Buff Orpington and a black Bantam.  I had a Buff before, she was the sweetest hen but very shy.  Other hens picked on her till she grew.  They are very big birds.   Orpington originated from England in the Counry of Kent. She had a best friend Gertrude who was a Frizzle Bantam.  They were so cute together.   I am going to name this Buff Emma too.  I also got a Welsummer and named her Sweet Pea.  I have wanted a Welsummer for quite some time, they lay large dark eggs with speckles.   Welsummers are a Dutch breed and are a cross between other breeds. There are a few different colors but Sweet Pea is what they call a speckled bird. They are supposed to be very friendly.  The black Bantam is named Louise.  She is stunning,  Dark, dark black.  She is quite friendly.  I put them in after dark and no one buy Milly paid much attention to them.  She sort of gave them the evil eye but she is never aggressive so no worries there.  This morning only one bird pecked them and I moved  her for the time being.  Things are going good and in a week or so they will be part of the gang.

GlOOMY DAY-GARY COMES FOR A VISIT-SITES ON THE BACK ROADS-MAUDE’S CARDS

22 09 2013
  1. Yesterday was a  gloomy day here in Western Mass.  Raining most of the day and the  dampness has seeped into the house.  Sammy’s respiratory problems have reared their ugly heads these past few days.  I am  setting up a humidifier in his room.   The sun came through this morning but its much cooler with plenty to cool breezes.  The change is light and coolness coming on has led the hens to stop laying and they are moulting.  I am getting one or two eggs per day instead of the 5 or 6.  They need the time off.  It will be good to get the new hens this week.

COMPANY COMING

My cousin Gary came last night from Maryland on Amtrak today.

He and I have train travel in out blood.  Our Grandfather worked for 41 years on the Pennsylvania railroad.

My visits to Maryland as a child were all about trains and most times my Mom and I would travel down there by train.  Train travel in the United States isn’t as convient as it used to be.  When I was young trains stopped almost at every town.  Now they only stop at cities.  Gary came into Brattleboro, Vermont which is only a half hour from my house.

Some wonderful scenes from he drive on the back roads to Brattleboro .

This morning Gary and I cut and folded them.  We are heading down to Sheep and Shawl this afternoon where they will be for sale.  I was so lucky to get this shot, it was on a dark day she was having an afternoon nap.  She is such a happy sheep you can see it in her face.  I am lucky to have her.

Many thanks for reading my blog today and I hope you have a wonderful day.   Carole
