A BOOK FIND-A WHOPPIE PIE DAY-CHRIS COMES-ANOTHER STORM

14 02 2015

GREETINGS

As I write this snow is coming down heavily and I can’t see the mountain across the valley.  The temps have been brutal with 15 below this morning. Winds are suppose to pick up and temps will go even lower.  They still aren’t sure how much snow this storm will bring.  It will be a surprise.  Things are already being shut down in Boston.  I am glad that I don’t have to be out in it but my daughter Cindy has to go to classes today.   A BOOK FIND

Amongst the books that were in the pile from Belchertown was this oldie.  Printed in 1909 by the Connecticut Valley Historical Society.  The History of Springfield in Massachusetts its called..  The book is filed with historical facts not only of Springfield but of the surrounding towns.  I am looking forward to reading it and learning new things about our area.  The following are a couple of pictures from the book.

It’s a great day to make Whoppie Pies  They are taking that winds could get as high as 60 miles an hour tomorrow so having comfort food around is a good thing.

The plants are surely well-insulated with all of this snow. Here in Kennebunk, Maine we have 75 inches already on the ground (50 inches arrived in the last two weeks) and are expecting another Nor’easter tonight through tomorrow to bring another foot to 18 inches of snow. The snow banks are already larger than huge. It’s snowing now (4:30). We will also get 50–60 mph wind gusts. BRRRRRRR & GRRRRRR! Winter was more fun when you could grab your Speed-Away or American Flyer sled or build a snow fort or go ice skating at Bray Lake! Much more comfort food and I’ll look like an overstuffed bear! Keep warm everyone.

Hi Fran
Did you get much snow from this last storm, we only got 4 or so inches but it snowed all night and day. I was surprised at the small amount. It is bitter cold here will spend the day adding warm water to the chickens water as it freezes quick. The winds were terrible last night and I am in a valley. Hope you are cozy and didn’t have to shovel. Al out time this winter has been spent keeping warm and shoveling.

We got another 18-20 inches on the 14 through the 15th. Snowing and blowing.. Tomorrow (Wednesday through Thursday we are due for another 5-8 inches. We have had very high winds too. This is being a very fierce winter. The temperatures have been consistently bitter cold since January too. Spring will be VERY welcome this year. Although in Maine we usually have mud season when the frost comes out of the ground and the snow melts. It’s a fine mess but at least it is warmer!

I am not going to complain anymore about what we have gotten We only got 4 inches from the last store More snow tomorrow and over the weekend though. I could take the snow any day its the bitter below zero with wind that is the killer. We have mud season too this year I think it will be a challenge. Hope you miss the next few storms . Is it my imagination or was winter like this when we were kids. I remember it this way.

Is this a normal winter for you Carole or are you having more and heavier snow than usual? I do hope you get better weather soon. We are very dry at the moment.

This is not a normal winter for us but in the 60’s it might have qualified as one. I was listening to Vermont Public Radio and they said that things are changing here in the states weather pattern wise and in the coming years the west coast will be without water and will be parched and this part of the country will have lost of rain and snow. The pattern has already started. Was your winter different thi year?

More or less the same as last year Carole, a little more snow but it did not last and a couple more frosts. Today when the sun is out it could be April, warm but with a couple of showers.

We only got about 4 inches of snow but the wind last night was bad. DOing chores today was no picnic. I will have to refresh the chickens water a few times this day. A chicken is being picked on so she will come in today. Oh dear I wish I had a nice basement as all would be down there. It would be much easier. Stay warm
