Hello

Travels through Western Massachusetts

The My son Lauren Lil, Gary and myself piled into my sons car for a road trip.  We had decided to go up Route 2 to the Hoosac Tunnel a favorite place for my family to go and picnic on the way.

I have pictures of my Grandfather in front of the entrance.

The tunnel was started in 1819 to get through the Hoosac Mountain barrier between Boston and Albany.   It was completed in 1873 with a loss of 195 lives.  It is a 4.75 mile tunnel.  Mostly freight trains go through it now.

We connected back to Route 2 and stopped in Florida, Ma. just before the hair pin turn down the mountain.  Its was blustery in Florida one of the highest towns in Massachusetts.  Drove down to North Adams to the Heritage State Park.  It is a state visitor’s center.  Inside is a history of the Tunnel.  Its very interesting.

We saw a sign for a natural bridge and decided to see what it was.    I had never visited there and  was so pleasantly surprised.  It was a wonderful place located on the site of a major marble quarry from 1810 to 1947.   Its a must see if you are out near North Adams but closes in October.
