SHETLAND SHEEP BOOKS I AM READING A FINISHED PROJECT THE SPINNING GROUP PERMACULTURE

3 09 2012

  HELLO

Yesterday I came across this book.  I used to sell it and sold many copies at the MARYLAND SHEEP AND WOOL FESTIVAL

It is chock full of information on Shetland Sheep, Cattle, Dogs, Ponies,Pigs, and Geese.  Lots of tidbits on the Shetland Isle too.

At the time I was selling it I had no Shetland sheep but found that the book was so interesting that I wanted to share it with my customers.

Now that I have Marley I am truly interested and hope to plan a trip to The Shetland Isles in the future.

There was one particular part which I thought  was in tune with the times.  It was about the older breed of Shetland sheep.  One that lived off the land with no antibiotics and grain.  The person writing this part of the book suggested that people grow sheep that are a local breed.  Those sheep which have grown on the lands for generations .  It makes perfect sence.  These sheep have adapted to the climate, the grasses etc.  The mountain in back of my house was once all sheep pasture, probably at the turn of the century.   Now I am interested in finding out just what type of sheep lived there.  If you are interested in this book I would try Amazon.

THE FINISHED PROJECT

I finally finished stuffing and backing the pumpkin pillow.  The backing is hand-dyed wool from my Uncle Roger Utley’s army blanket.  I really enjoyed hooking this.  The pattern or kit is available from CAMP WOOL in Kennebunk, Maine.

SPINNING ON A MONDAY AFTERNOON

Today a small group if fiber enthusiasts met at Kildaby Farm.  At their farm they have Angora Goats and some Peacocks and sell fine yarns from their flock and handwoven items.  Its great to get together with other people who have the same interests.  Ideas are exchanged, we have an annual dye party, fiber problems are solved.  A unique group where we all try to help each other.  I look forward to Mondays.  Some of us will be on the Crafts of Colrain Tour in November.  Check out the Crafts of Colrain online
